Editor’s Note: This podcast is part two of a conversation that Ashleigh (aka The Chick Lit Chick) and I had about the future of chick lit and its relationship to young women. It may seem like a strange question for a chick lit columnist to ask, but the discussion is very interesting (even for chick lit haters!). Enjoy!

Whitney,
This is such an interesting interview. I can’t wait to see the rest of it. I think you make a great point about young women and priorities shifting. I’d take it further than just our desire to be altruistic. I think that, with the recession and the reality of what it means when the credit card company comes calling for their money, there’s also a sense that these novels were selling a con. I would say the girls who read these books and tried to be the Carries are facing the reality and it ain’t pretty. And the reality isn’t like your “Confessions of a Shopaholic” reality where it still all works out magically in the end.
